Two new small-scale LNG facilities planned in Canada, one for bunkering

Nova Scotia LNG is planning to build two small LNG facilities in Canada with a total capacity of 0.18-0.26 MTPA. A 30,000-60,000 tpa plant and another 150,000-200,000 tpa project will be constructed, with the former targeting bunkering demand along the US and Canadian East Coast and the latter on diesel displacement markets in the Caribbean.

COOEC expecting drop of 30% in orders in 2015

COOEC is expecting orders for its offshore project contracting services to fall by 30% this year as a result of cancellations in inter­national projects and dwindling activities in the South China Sea. However, China still remains attractive to international contracting companies due to its low labour costs. For example, the labour cost runs as high as $120 per hour in Canada, about six times that of China. The company is pursuing up to 40 international EPCI projects with some in new markets such as Brazil and Mexico.

Elk-Antelope to make FID in 2017, cost to be ~$2,000 per ton

The Total-led owners of the Elk-Antelope LNG project in Papua New Guinea plans concept selection by 1H2015 and FID in 2017. Analysts believe Elk-Antelope can be built for $2,000 per tonne, significantly less than Australian and Canadian projects, and competitive with the best of the US projects.

Goldman sees global LNG projects at risk as demand growth slows

LNG projects in Africa, Canada and Australia face delays or even cancellation as global demand growth slows and US output increases, according to Goldman Sachs. Outside of the US, Papua New Guinea and East Africa are the best placed regions to compete on cost competitiveness.

Woodfibre, Guangzhou sign LNG MoU

Woodfibre LNG Export and Guangzhou Gas Group have signed an MoU concerning potential LNG offtake of 1 mtpa of the chilled gas for 25 years starting in 2017. The 2.1-mtpa Woodfibre project is owned by Pacific Oil & Gas, a unit of the Singapore-based RGE Group, which was founded by Indonesian businessman Sukanto Tanoto.

Woodfibre LNG contract goes to Linde

The Linde Group has been awarded a contract to provide engineering and procurement services for a 2.1 mtpa LNG plant for Woodfibre LNG, located near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It bridges the gap in the LNG industry between traditional mid-scale and large-scale LNG trains and will be the second largest Linde-engineered LNG plant.

LNG Canada weighing up yards for two trains

A pre-qualification exercise is under way for module fabrication of Shell-led LNG Canada project whereby yards in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, South Korea and China are being accessed. The project comprising two plus one optional LNG trains, each with a production capacity of 6 mtpa of LNG. Chiyoda, Foster Wheeler, Saipem and WorleyParsons were awarded the main contract in May.

Will Malaysia emerge as the new Qatar of LNG

Wood Mackenzie’s analysis suggests that Petronas’s flexible LNG volume will grow from 2.5 mtpa in 2013 to 26 mtpa in 2022, through new capacity additions in eastern Malaysia as well as Canada, offtake agreements with other suppliers and projects such as GLNG in Australia.
